It is the smile of a boy who is full of empathy, understanding and respect for others, but who constantly receives scathing remarks ranging from being too fair, too short, to the most painfully touching exhortations to "smile, you shrill"!
The boy who loved lively interactions was left with only the name "the boy at the back of the class", gradually shutting down, distancing himself from his peers and keeping the safest environment to smile in - home.
Just when it seemed like the longest road to orthodontic treatment was over, we heard:
"One of the more complicated cases, one of the front teeth is missing, the existing tooth will have to be removed, and it will be a long treatment. This will be followed by an aesthetic filling, where the beautifully named "abra kadabra" will be used to make the canine teeth no longer canine, and the next teeth will become canine."
I didn't think to ask how much the treatment would cost. She wanted only one thing, to help her son regain his self-confidence sooner. But then the son voiced that question, got up from his chair, thanked me for my time and left, muttering 'I will grow up, earn my money and build up the "iron" myself'.
The treatment facility had indicated that there is reimbursement for this type of treatment, but we ran into another disadvantage - time. In order to receive reimbursed treatment, we would have to wait in a queue for 3 years or more before an initial consultation. Time, unfortunately, is not our friend, as the boy is currently undergoing additional hormonal treatment, which has its own unchristian price.
Just like every Mum or Dad, if it is not just a word, cares about the well-being of their children and their emotional health, I am no exception. He is the only one around whom all thoughts revolve. Every morning starts with motivational phrases like "Son, it's not how you look, but how wonderful you really are inside", and the evenings are greeted with comforting words of consolation, sometimes to the point of tears, unfortunately...
So I have decided to go down this road and to seek help for that first step, so that all those insults like "shouter", "vampire", "hoe", become a thing of the past as soon as possible. The boy wants to smile!
To all contributors, my sincere thanks in advance.
